چکیده

Resumen Background: Likelihood-based methods can work poorly when the residuals are not normally distributed and the variances across clusters are heterogeneous. Method: The performance of two estimation methods, the non-parametric residual bootstrap (RB) and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) for fi tting multilevel models are compared through simulation studies in terms of bias, coverage, and precision. Results: We fi nd that (a) both methods produce unbiased estimates of the fi xed parameters, but biased estimates of the random parameters, although the REML was more prone to give biased estimates for the variance components; (b) the RB method yields substantial reductions in the difference between nominal and actual confi dence interval coverage, compared with the REML method; and (c) for the square root of the mean squared error (RMSE) of the fi xed effects, the RB method performed slightly better than the REML method. For the variance components, however, the RB method did not offer a systematic improvement over the REML method in terms of RMSE. Conclusions: It can be stated that the RB method is, in general, superior to the REML method with violated assumptions.

Multilevel bootstrap analysis with assumptions violated.

BACKGROUND Likelihood-based methods can work poorly when the residuals are not normally distributed and the variances across clusters are heterogeneous. METHOD The performance of two estimation methods, the non-parametric residual bootstrap (RB) and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) for fitting multilevel models are compared through simulation studies in terms of bias, coverage, and pr...

A multilevel model framework for meta-analysis of clinical trials with binary outcomes.

In this paper we explore the potential of multilevel models for meta-analysis of trials with binary outcomes for both summary data, such as log-odds ratios, and individual patient data. Conventional fixed effect and random effects models are put into a multilevel model framework, which provides maximum likelihood or restricted maximum likelihood estimation. To exemplify the methods, we use the ...

Authors: Ray Chambers* and Hukum Chandra*

An accurate estimate of the uncertainty associated with a parameter estimate is important if we want to avoid misleading inference. The bootstrap technique (Efron, 1979; Efron and Tisbshirani, 1993) is a very general way of measuring the accuracy of estimators, and was originally developed for parameter estimation given independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) data. However, random effects ...

A risk adjusted self-starting Bernoulli CUSUM control chart with dynamic probability control limits

Usually, in monitoring schemes the nominal value of the process parameter is assumed known. However, this assumption is violated owing to costly sampling and lack of data particularly in healthcare systems. On the other hand, applying a fixed control limit for the risk-adjusted Bernoulli chart causes to a variable in-control average run length performance for patient populations with dissimilar...

Practice of Epidemiology Internal Validation of Risk Models in Clustered Data: AComparison of Bootstrap Schemes

Internal validity of a risk model can be studied efficiently with bootstrapping to assess possible optimism in model performance. Assumptions of the regular bootstrap are violated when the development data are clustered. We compared alternative resampling schemes in clustered data for the estimation of optimism in model performance. A simulation study was conducted to compare regular resampling...
